FIRE First Amendment Scholarship Competition
This is some text inside of a div block.
Mental health challenges in the fire service are often described as ‘well known’ and widespread. But do we truly understand what the most pressing mental health issues are, why they persist, or how the mental health of firefighters compares to the general population?”

As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say, we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknowns—the ones we don’t know, we don’t know. It is those in the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones” (Donald Rumsfeld, 2002).

This year’s essay challenges you to examine what makes the fire service unique in its struggles with mental health. Is it the nature of the work, the culture, or larger societal factors? Gaining a deeper understanding of the “why” is the first step toward finding meaningful solutions to these ongoing challenges.

Mary Graham Foundation College & Trade School Scholarship and Support Program
This is some text inside of a div block.
The Mary Graham Children’s Foundation (MGCF) recognizes that helping ensure a smoother transition from foster care to a successful and independent life is to have a stable financial situation and solid support system.

We help with this transition by providing
• financial assistance to help students pay for college and trade school related expenses (including but not limited to tuition, books, living expenses and transportation)
• social support and guidance from a volunteer adult mentor*
• social gatherings throughout the year for students to meet other students with similar experiences*

We recognize that financial situations change from year to year and sometimes from semester to semester, and if that happens, students are encouraged to reach out to us. For example, if a student ages out and no longer receives AB12 support or transfers schools mid-year, they may qualify for (increased) financial support.

*Students who do not qualify for financial support are still welcome and encouraged to be part of the Program.

- Must be in final year of undergraduate academic work or received an undergraduate degree.

- Must enroll in a graduate degree-granting program on a part- or full-time basis at an academically accredited graduate or degree-granting professional school.

One of the many ways we seek to do this is through our annual scholarship contest that we’ve been hosting since 2015! Did you know that this year, we will have awarded over $40,000 in scholarship money to college and graduate students? And believe it or not, 2025 is the 11th year that we’ve been offering scholarship opportunities for students via an essay contest.

This year we're offering three different opportunities:
1) General college scholarships
2) Nursing scholarships
3) Graduate school scholarships

In previous years, the scholarship prizes were awarded based on an essay that was required as part of the application. This year, to expand the reach of the scholarship, the essay is no longer required.

ACTFL Future Teacher Scholarship

Launched in 2019, the Future Teacher Scholarship Program provides recipients with an award of $1,500 per academic year. Scholarships may be renewed up to three times following the initial award, for a cumulative total of $6,000 per recipient. Teacher Scholars also receive complimentary ACTFL membership-which includes access to the ACTFL Mentoring Program aimed at early-career language educators-during their participation in the program as well as for one year following graduation and entry into the teaching field. Due to the urgent shortage currently in this field, deferrals will not be permitted and awardees who intend to renew their scholarships must do so in consecutive years.
